Taboo is an experimental documentary that is based on an existing board game called Taboo in which the players have to describe the words on their cards to the other players without using the five other forbidden words listed below on each card. In this case the artists changed the ordinary words on cards into the ‘real’ political, cultural, and sexual taboos of Turkey. This game-documentary-research aims at decoding people's ideas, prejudices, stereotypes and reflections on controversial and taboo-like concepts existing in Turkish society. The competitive and performative quality of the game proves to be an effective methodology in revealing the codes people use while thinking and talking, in a more advantageous way than familiar ways of questioning. Here the participants are players and they has to succeed. There is a time constraint, they have to be quick, the game is fun, so they say whatever comes to their mind, putting aside their politically correct statements and careful expressions. They forget the camera, because in the mood of the game, the other players become the camera.
Along with the screening of Taboo, Kuryel will animate a workshop, in which the participants will create a new version of Taboo, that will explore charged terms specific to TURN*ON and its host city, Montreal.
